Race and Mission Snacks - what we eat before, during and after.

We are so lucky to have such a great group of staff, athletes, and ambassadors who have a ton of knowledge and experience with both epic missions and races of many kinds. We plan to squeeze them like a sponge to pour all that knowledge into a series of blog posts. (So, you can also have this information!)

Today we're talking about what team Further Faster eats before, during, and after a mission or race. Now, we're not nutritionists by any stretch of the imagination- this is what works for our team, personally. Please don't make drastic changes to your diet without consulting a professional - which we aren't!
Now with the disclaimer out of the way, let's pass it over to the team!

Following radiation and chemotherapy as well as surgery for throat cancer, food now needs to be slurpy. Powdered food (like Ensure 2cal) has been an amazing find as it has all the ingredients needed to supply energy and sustain life and is really light to carry on huge missions. I would have loved to have found it decades ago!

What is your go to meal before a race or massive day?

I stick with something I know, the morning of a first day of an epic mission - my go to is Hubbards Laffare Coffee & Cacao Muesli, with no milk - just some Little Island Natural Cashew Yoghurt and a small spoonful of Fix & Fogg's Granola Butter. I have this every morning and just increase or decrease amounts of the ingredients, if necessary, based on what I'm doing and how I'm feeling.

If I'm having coffee, I have it quite early in the day so any response my body has to it doesn't happen once I've headed out on my trip.

It's a bit of a tradition that enroute back from a tramp we get Maccas... But recently we've also frothed Indian takeaways, and I'm also a fiend for homemade fried tempeh poké bowls with fresh raw veggies like carrot, cucumber and a slaw mix, because I'm also inherently lazy and takeaways seem like too much effort for me... I know that seems rather unbelievable but it's true!

And what do you eat when you are going hard?

So many things... Epic missions for me are often tramps or mountain bike rides so I have a little luxury with carrying a little more stuff... I use Pure energy gels, Pic's Peanut Butter Slugs, Whittaker's controversial Oat Milk chocolate, and Pam's sour party mix (yes, I know. Ridiculous.) For lunches on the go, we pack fresh rolls with slaw and our preferred protein for our first day out. Our last trip we had Ramen Noodles with cashew nuts and preferred protein on day two, and my previous trip I had couscous with textured vegetable protein, some spices, sundried tomatoes and a vegan pesto mix. I would cold soak it at the start of the day. It was a great lightweight option with a good mix of fats and a little protein to keep me going.
