Salewa Ortles Ascent Mid GTX Boot - Mens
The Ortles Ascent Mid Gore-Tex® mountain boot is a solid solution for alpine mountaineers.
Tre Cime, Marmolada, Cinque Torri, Tofana – big mountain days in the Dolomites and alpine mountaineering involves moving over rock, ice and snow, often in severe conditions and difficult terrain. More than any other piece of equipment, you need to be able to trust your footwear.
The Ortles Ascent Mid Gore-Tex® mountain boot is a solid solution for alpine mountaineers. Its thick suede leather upper, SALEWA® 3F System with steel cables and reinforced TPU rand make it exceptionally robust and durable, while the stiff carbon-loaded nylon fibreglass insole increases stability during activity. It has been engineered with a dual density expanded polyurethane midsole with dedicated stiff and cushioned zones, to ensure both comfort and precision, while the interchangeable layers of the Multi Fit Footbed Plus (MFF+) allow a customizable fit.
The semi-crampon-compatible Vibram® Alpine Guide sole unit is engineered for traction, durability and reliability on difficult terrain at low temperatures. Its overall firmness is a key factor for use with crampons on snow and ice. The tread design features self-cleaning lugs for outstanding grip and a climbing toe profile for high edging performance.
Moreover, the waterproof, breathable GORE-TEX® Insulated Comfort membrane has an extra insulated layer, which makes it the perfect option to keep your feet warm and dry in colder winter conditions in the mountains and there is an integrated stretch gaiter to prevent snow ingress. For additional downhill performance, the Ankle Protector System (APS) consists of a thermoformed material heel cuff that provides additional lateral ankle support, while the Flex Collar also further improves rear mobility.

NEW ZEALAND DELIVERY
For delivery of orders within New Zealand, excluding boats and oversized items:
- All local orders NZD $199 and over are shipped free using a standard signature-required service.
- All local orders under NZD $199 are charged a flat fee of NZD $10 and are shipped using standard signature-required service.
- We mostly use Post Haste Couriers as our courier service
- Allow 1-2 business days for standard South Island shipping and 2-3 business days for the North Island.
- Rural Address and PO box numbers please add business 2 days.
- Once your order has been dispatched you will receive an email with tracking information.
- Once your order has left the store it is at the mercy of the couriers. Please check your tracking information and contact the couriers if it has not arrived when expected.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO RECEIVE MY ORDER?
- Allow 1-2 business days for standard South Island shipping and 2-3 business days for the North Island.
- Rural Address and PO Boxes, please add 2 more days.
- We try our best to get your orders out to you ASAP, however, during our peak times (Christmas, Sale week etc), we may need an extra day to process them.
- These estimates are for a perfect world when courier companies work on time and natural disasters and pandemics are at bay. Once it has left the shop it is sometimes up to the shipping gods!

- We can’t change addresses in the system once your order has been placed, however, send an email to hello@furtherfaster.co.nz or call us in-store and we will endeavour to change the address.

WHERE IS MY ORDER:
- Once your order has been shipped you will receive a Shipment Order Email. This will have a link to your tracking details, you can use this link to find the location of your parcel and contact the courier company to see how far away it is.
- If you have not received a confirmation email within 24hrs, please check your junk box in your email, as some times we need to get in touch with you and emails do happen to end up in there!
- Alternatively, speak to our order guru 'Bot-Bruce', and he can find the tracking details for you in the chat section of this pop-up. Just ask him, 'Where is my order?' and follow the prompts 🐻.
INTERNATIONAL DELIVERY (AUSTRALIA, USA)
- All Australian orders are charged a flat fee of NZD $35 and are shipped using a standard service (not including boats or paddles). Paddles are NZD $125 for 2 and 4 piece paddles and NZD $195 for 1 piece paddles.
- All North American orders are charged a flat fee of NZD $90 and are shipped using a standard service (not including boats or paddles).
- Standard delivery times for international orders can vary from 5 business days to 6 weeks.
- Once your item has been dispatched you will receive an email with tracking information.
- International orders do not come with a signature delivery confirmation.
- Please do not buy products with eggs or bacon, as international customs do not like this and your order may be confiscated at your own cost (no one wants wasted bacon and eggs!)
- NZ GST: For international orders New Zealand sales tax (GST) is not included in the price. However the price shown on the website is the price to be paid regardless of the country to be shipped to.
SPECIAL ORDER ITEMS
- All orders are shipped from our Christchurch store and usually leave the next working day. If for some reason we don't have the item you ordered we will notify you as soon as possible and let you know when you can expect delivery. Special order for non stocked items vary however are usually 2-6 weeks.
BOATS
Need your boat shipped? No problem!
Shipping is excluded at time of purchase. The team will calculate this separately after your purchase and contact you with the best rates at the time.
As a cost indication shipping typically starts at $99 for smaller boats and $150 for longer, larger boats. Cost will also vary depending on where in NZ needs to go.
Boats are delivered to your nearest Mainfreight Depot for you to collect from there.

I am generally a minimalist footwear user - for general tramping, including steep scree and rock I prefer much lighter-weight and flexible shoes like my Vivobarefoot Magna ESC. I even have some specialist crampons that work well with the Vivobarefoot shoes on icy snow that's not too steep. However they're not really suitable when needing to kick into firm snow as it gets steeper and the consequences higher, so I needed a stiff, warm crampon-compatible boot for mountain snow adventures.
I tried on lots of different semi-automatic crampon compatible boots in Christchurch. I have large feet (size 48) and a very wide forefoot from using minimalist shoes for many years, so was searching for the widest boots I could find. I really wanted some lighter weight options, (or boots that were on sale at the time) to work, but the Salewa Ortles Ascent Mid ended up being the Goldilocks/Cinderella fit for my feet, even though they were a little heavier and more expensive than some of the other options. The Scarpa Manta Tech were on sale at Further Faster and were also a wide fit, but the Salewa Ortles Ascent Mid allows me really tighten up the laces around the ankle and lock my heels in, while leaving the toes loose, so I eventually chose the best fit over the best price (at the time)
I have since used the boots on several winter missions, from soft to very firm icy snow, and they've proved solid and reliable, great for kicking and biting into even the really icy snow.
I have read online that with larger sizes on 3/4 shank boots like these, you end up with a lot more flex than a smaller boot, and I've found that to be true. I found when front-pointing up steep snow with crampons, the toes were flexing quite a lot (size 48 boots, 120-125kg with gear and pack on), and my calves were burning out pretty quickly.
The right boots are all about personal fit and what you want to use them for. The additional flex with my larger size and weight may be better for general walking, but less helpful for steeper snow conditions.
I've found that as soon as I'm off the snow, I switch back to my minimalist footwear. I feel much more stable and able to respond to the terrain using the lighter, flexible shoes I'm used too, and the much more rigid Ortles Ascent Mid are clunky and unstable in comparison.
Because I'm not using the boots outside of snowy/icy and steep conditions where I need the rigidity, I probably don't actually need the 3/4 shank to aid general walking. I may have been better off choosing a full shank, fully-automatic crampon compatible boot, but I guess those are things you only learn through experience!
So, overall, for me - a great fit, and does everything it says out of the box. For larger/heavier people with big shoe sized, 3/4 shank boots end up flexing a lot more than smaller sizes. That can either be an advantage or a disadvantage depending on how you want to use them!
3d lacing eyelet popped out after 15km of use.
This should not be happening to a 700$ pair of boots.
Currently waiting for Salewa to rectify the problem.
