Secure grip meets comfortable support with the The Rapace GTX - a lightweight mountaineering boot that teams a hard-wearing nubuck and fabric upper with waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX protection.

The Rapace GTX features the 3F System for ankle support, flexibility and a perfect fit. Its Vibram Wrapping Thread Combi (WTC) outsole has an aggressive tread pattern that gives good traction, yet provides a natural feel and secure grip on rock.

Inside the boot, SALEWA Bilight technology in the midsole ensures an ergonomic hold and long-lasting cushioning for extended comfort. The Rapace GTX is also stiff enough for use with hybrid/semi-automatic crampons.

In addition, the GORE-TEX Performance Comfort lining delivers optimized climate comfort should the weather close in on you and there's a full rubber rand for protection against rock and scree.

Salewa Rapace boots

very comfortable wore these boots on the 21 day Kanchenjunga base camp trek a

Hesitantly pleased.

I was recommended these boots by the staff and have worn them on two tramps. They fit fantastically were so comfortable out of the box. They are easy to put on, light, and appear durable. The only concern I have is reading a number of reviews that the sole doesn't last anywhere near as long as it should. I see a review here that the Salwea NZ said they can't be re soled although read a review from the USA that Salwea USA re soled a pair due to early wear and it does appear pretty much any leather shoe can be re soled so hoping if my boots' soles wear out too quickly Salwea will come to the party.

Great boot ruined by serious flaw

I bought a pair of Salewa Rapace GTX boots to replace a pair of much loved Meindl Makalus for trans-alpine tramping. I opted for the Rapace due to their stiffness and light weight.
In their only outing, a four day loop around the Routeburn, Lake Wilson, Lake Narine and the North Branch of the Routeburn they did all I expected of them - stable and comfortable on trail, sidling and scrambling with no heel lift, blisters or hot spots.
However in the four four days of use, one of which was walking up the graded Routeburn track and one walking down tussock terraces the boot’s soles were very severely worn!
The braking blocks on both heels had disappeared, and the edges on both boots are now seriously rounded. This makes them dangerous in the mountains as it prevents the user biting into steep terrain, especially on snow grass and snow/neve.
I returned the boots the the shop, however the NZ agent confirmed the soles cannot be re-soled and they considered the wear ’normal wear and tear’. Given other boots have had many hundreds of km on them in similar terrain before needing a re-sole, and that Salwea markets the Rapace as a “Lightweight Alpine Mountaineering” boot, I believe this makes them totally unsuited and very poor value for money. Which is a shame, as in all other respects I found the boot excellent.
It may well be that I got a dud sole, but are you going to risk $580.00 on a boot that may only last week in the hills?

Rapace

Haven't had much of a chance to try these boots cause of the weather and xmas family stuff but did a 5km walk with my grandson on a metal track and was very pleased with them. I'm well into my 70's now with buggered ankles (archilles ) and found the Salewa mountain trainer boots and Rapace give great support. For normal hiking with good hoofs I would recommend the Mountain trainer. After about 50 years of hiking/hunting I would go for Salewa over most other brands.

Comfortable and light

Took these boots for a first trial run up Mt Herbert. They were comfortable from the outset and much lighter than my previous boots. They look like they will take a bit of a hammering and should be a really good boot for me on tougher ground. I’m looking forward to testing them out.
